This free event will give the public the opportunity to engage with current and former Artists-in-Residence; view innovative music, dance, and visual performances; explore Montalvo’s historic grounds; and enjoy dining options from gourmet food trucks.

Rock the Garden 2015 will feature a large scale performance festival showcasing live works by former and current LAP residents. The performances, which will take place throughout Montalvo’s grounds and historical villa, will include works by dancer/choreographers, composer/musicians, and visual and performance artists. Visitors will also be able to enjoy the various art works on view on Montalvo’s grounds, including some new installation, intervention and participatory based works by LAP residents premiering this summer, and a stunning exhibition of bronze works by acclaimed American sculptor Stephen De Staebler.

Highlights of the festival will include:

  • The premiere of three new site-specific performances by acclaimed choreographer and artistic director of Zaccho Dance Theatre Joanna Haigood with acrobatic aerial performer Zoe Klein, performing artist Clare Whistler, and dancer Adonis Damian Martin Quinones; choreographer/performance artist Nehara Kalev with songwriter/acrobat Nikki Borodi and acrobat/musician/designer Glenn Easley; and celebrated composer/media artist Pamela Z.
  • The restaging of an ambitious large scale sculptural and performance installation by internationally recognized performance artist Hirokazu Kosaka with Butoh master Oguri and harmonica player Tetsuya Nakamura.
  • Musical performances by hip-hop artist and member of the performance collective iLL-Literacy Dahlak; concert pianist/sound artist/composer Motoko Honda with trumpet player/composer/improviser Kris Tiner; and collaborative genre melding musical ensemble Real Vocal String Quartet.
  • Interdisciplinary performances by choreographer/performer Lauren Baines and performance artists/co-directors of NAKA (Navarrete x Kajiyama Dance Theater) Debby Kajiyama and Jose Navarrete with multi-instrumentalist Adria Otte.
  • The opportunity to explore an exhibition of bronze sculptures by acclaimed Bay Area artist Stephen De Staebler; a new permanent seating element in Montalvo’s Italianate Garden by artist/designer Christopher Loomis; a temporary site specific installation by Imin Yeh; and the debut of the permanent installation of A Healing Walk by Susan O’Malley.
